Against a background of continuing climate change and with renewed warnings of the risk of “Water Wars”, the management of water resources across international borders has become a question of increasing contemporary importance. This study presents an overview of the political and economic issues related to water use and traces the history of conflict and cooperation between the riverian states of the River Nile from 1950 to 2013, underlining the successes of negotiatiated settlements but indicating also the unresolved issues which may constitute a threat to Middle-eastern peace in the future.
In uno scenario testimone del continuo cambiamento climatico, dove le dichiarazioni su possibili “guerre idriche” si susseguono, la gestione delle risorse idriche internazionali diventa una tematica attuale e di crescente importanza politica. Questo saggio presenta un quadro delle questioni politiche ed economiche relative all’uso dell’acqua e traccia la storia dei conflitti e della cooperazione tra gli stati rivieraschi del bacino del fiume Nilo dal 1950 al 2013, sottolineando il successo degli accordi negoziati ma riportando anche le questioni irrisolte che potrebbero costituire in futuro una minaccia per la pace. |
