Note: A “gothic horror novel” written in bygone days, with a sophistication today’s “horror fiction” lacks.
The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole is an example of classic gothic fiction first published in 1764 in the United Kingdom.
A true book of value, a classic that continues to live on across the ages. Books from yesteryear have an artistic quality and a permanence often lacking in books from the modern era. You are sure to love this work. A haunted castle story of the finest type.
A Glimpse Inside
While the ladies were conveying the wretched mother to her bed, Manfred remained in the court, gazing on the ominous casque, and regardless of the crowd which the strangeness of the event had now assembled around him. The few words he articulated, tended solely to inquiries, whether any man knew from whence it could have come? Nobody could give him the least information. However, as it seemed to be the sole object of his curiosity, it soon became so to the rest of the spectators, whose conjectures were as absurd and improbable, as the catastrophe itself was unprecedented. In the midst of their senseless guesses, a young peasant, whom rumour had drawn thither from a neighbouring village, observed that the miraculous helmet was exactly like that on the figure in black marble of Alfonso the Good, one of their former princes, in the church of St. Nicholas.
Synopsis
Horace Walpole wrote the novel The Castle of Otranto. It is often recognised as the earliest gothic novel, having been published in 1764. The novel was subtitled A Gothic Story in the second edition, and Walpole used the word Gothic in the subtitle. The tale, set in a haunted castle, combined medievalism and dread in a style that has been popular ever since. The book’s aesthetic has influenced modern gothic literature, films, art, music, and the goth subculture.
Walpole was inspired to compose the story following a nightmare he had at his Gothic Revival residence in southwest London, Strawberry Hill House. With authors like as Clara Reeve, Ann Radcliffe, William Thomas Beckford, Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, and George du Maurier, the book launched a literary genre that would become highly popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
