Pier Maria Scotti, Earl of Vigoleno and Carpaneto, returns to Piacenza after an absence of 8 years.

He decides to conquer Piacenza and in order to do this he gathers a group of men: his brother, old

noble friends, counterfeiters and evildoers, all Ghibellines.

He succeeds in entering the walls of Piacenza, but his first attempt to conquer the city fails because

of a spy, and bursts into an inner battle within the city walls between Guelfi and Ghibellines.
